['dʒefrɪːz], John Richard, englischer Schriftsteller, * Coate (County Wiltshire) 6. 11. 1848, ✝ Goring-by-Sea (County West Sussex) 14. 8. 1887; Farmerssohn, arbeitete als Journalist, schrieb Romane, wurde populär durch einfühlsame, genau beobachtende Naturskizzen von hoher Stilkunst (»The gamekeeper at home«, 1878; »Wild life in a southern county«, 1879; »The amateur poacher«, 1879). Naturmag. Ideen prägen auch die Kinderbücher »Wood magic« (1881, 2 Bände) und »Bevis, the story of a boy« (1882, 3 Bände) sowie die Autobiographie »The story of my heart« (1883; deutsch »Die Geschichte meines Herzens«).
